Declaring a "pop emergency" on Twitter earlier today (August 12) after snippets of her new single 'Applause' started sprouting online, Lady Gaga decided to beat the hackers at their own game and unveil the song eight days early.
Naturally, the track has evoked a Marmite love-it-or-hate-it reaction online; and while Gaga would most likely perceive feelings of indifference towards her music as the biggest insult of all, we're reserving full judgement until we've lived with it for a few days.
After an initial few spins, here are some things we like and some things we don't like about 'Applause'.
Something we like:
It's not comparable to the bubblegum pop hooks on The Fame nor violent beats of Born This Way, but rather an amalgamation of both.
Something we don't like:
We're not yet sold on the verses, on which she sounds like she's doing her best David Bowie impression.
Something we like:
The chorus, which combines cheerleader-style clapping with a thumping electro-dance beat that grows on the ears with every listen. We're probably alone in this, but (small) elements of it remind us of something you might hear on Rudimental's album.
Something we don't like:
For an artist so set on pushing boundaries, the song's EDM-pop sound is a genre that's far from new to most of us.
Something we like:
The hook: "Put you're hands up/ Make them touch" sounded terrible on paper but in reality works brilliantly.
Something we don't like:
It doesn't sound as big as 'Bad Romance' or 'Poker Face'.
Something we like:
It's a relatively straightforward pop song which, given the build up to ARTPOP, wasn't always a given.
