LONDON – Actor Tom Holland, who appeared in The Impossible alongside Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, is among the 17 names picked for the inaugural British Academy of Film and Television Arts Breakthrough Brits, in partnership with Burberry.
The 17 newcomers were handpicked by a jury for BAFTA and Burberry as people "who are making a name for themselves within film, television or games."
The chosen few also included writer-director Rowan Athale, whose debut feature Wasteland played at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and TV writer Dominic Mitchell, who wrote In the Flesh for the BBC.
Jury members included Felicity Jones (The Invisible Woman), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) and Shane Meadows.
BAFTA chairman John Willis, who led the jury after an open call for nominations, said the aim is to "turbocharge the careers of really talented people right across the spectrum of the creative industries" using "the help, support, encouragement and nurturing that an organization like BAFTA can give them."
The gang of 17 will be celebrated at a showcase event Oct. 21 in the British capital, billed as a day of networking sessions and talks from industry figures at BAFTA’s headquarters, before being whisked off to an evening reception at Burberry’s global flagship store in London.
