The show's writers considered killing off the former marine - played by Damian Lewis - in both the first and second seasons, but opted to let him live both times.

"I think that the writing staff was convinced that there was enough story to tell, certainly for the second season, and obviously, by the third season, we're still telling that story," Gansa told Vulture .

"But I believe there will come a point at which telling that story further is just a case of diminishing return. I don't know whether that's going to happen this season, or whether it's going to happen next season."

The Brody character will not appear in season three's early instalments, though Gansa insisted that his impact is felt "all over the first two episodes".

"He's just not physically present," the executive producer explained. "So the question becomes, will that [feeling] exist when Brody is gone for good? I don't know, but it's an interesting question."

Homeland returns to Showtime this Sunday (September 27) and will air on Channel 4 in the UK a week later, on October 6 at 9pm.
