'X Factor' series 10 launches with 8.78m viewers on ITV

The X Factor 's tenth series kicked off with 8.78m viewers (40%) from 8pm on ITV, overnight data suggests.

The first auditions show, which saw the return of Sharon Osbourne to the judging panel, peaked with 9.08m at 9pm. A further 423k (2.1%) caught the programme on +1.

The average figure of 8.78m is up 680k on the ninth series launch show but down 2.5m from 2011.


Prior to The X Factor, dance competition Stepping Out debuted with 3.54m (20.9%) at 6.30pm (117k/0.6%)


Through the Keyhole took 5.14m (26.2m) at 9.30pm (240k/1.6%) and movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall was watched by 640k (6.5%) from 10.45pm.


On BBC One, That Puppet Game Show fell 890k from last week to 1.01m (8.4%) at the earlier time of 5.15pm. I Love My Country appealed to 2.62m (15%) at 7pm.


The National Lottery: Break the Safe scored 2.88m (13.8%) at 7.45pm, while Casualty was watched by 3.80m (17%) at 8.45pm and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow pulled in 2.31m (11.7%) at 9.30pm. Match of the Day followed with 3.12m (22.7%) at 10.15pm.


On BBC Two, Proms Extra 2013 aired from 7pm, with 470k (4.1%) tuning in. Dad's Army had 1.20m (6.2%) at 7.45pm and Thatcher: The Downing Street Years interested 530k (2.4%) at 8.15pm.

Terror in the Desert earned 630k viewers (3.2%) from 9.15pm, after which QI: XL had 900k (5.5%) at 10.15pm.


On Channel 4, 9/11: 102 Minutes That Changed America and Terminator 2: Judgement Day took 1.24m (6%) and 590k (3.9%) respectively from 7.30pm (315k/1.5% and 141k/1.4%).


Elsewhere, two episodes of NCIS appealed to 685k (3.6%) and 887k (3.2%) from 8pm on Channel 5 (89k/0.4% and 114k/0.6%), while the latest episode of Celebrity Big Brother interested 1.22m (7%) at 10pm (152k/1.4%) and Celebrity Big Brother's Bit on the Psych grabbed 579k (5.5%) an hour later (77k/1.4%).


Foyle's War was the highest rated broadcast on the multichannels, picking up 947k (4.8%) on ITV3 at 7pm.
