The hardware will run on the newly revealed SteamOS and will be available for purchase in 2014.
"Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world," Valve said today (September 25) on the Steam website.
"We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS."
This year the firm will be shipping prototypes of the boxes to only 300 Steam users for testing.
To become eligible to try out the new hardware for free, you must join the Steam Universe community group. You then need to agree to the Steam hardware beta terms and conditions, make ten Steam friends, create a public Steam community profile, and then finally play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode.
Although the steps don't need to be completed in any order, they must be finished by October 25.
Once users complete all the steps, they will be awarded a special badge and will be officially among the eligible candidates to receive the beta hardware in 2013.
This is the second of three announcements by Valve for this week. The third and final announcement will take place on Friday, September 27.
