The actor has appeared as Robin's (Cobie Smulders) ex-boyfriend Simon in two episodes of the CBS comedy - one in 2008 and the other last February.

Van Der Beek tweeted about his return on Friday (October 18), alongside a picture of the script for 'Bedtime Stories'.
The episode he will appear in will be the 12th of the current season, written by creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.
Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston will also reprise his role on How I Met Your Mother.
He will again play Hammond Druthers, Ted's former co-worker who last appeared in the second season of the show.
