She told PA : "Sue Johnston, I adore, I've known her for years and years. I think she is just fantastic."

Johnston - who plays Gloria Price - announced earlier this year that she is leaving the soap to pursue other acting projects. Her final scenes will air in spring 2014.

"I'm hoping we get stuff together. We've had little bits but not a great deal," Callard added.

The 56-year-old also said that Liz's time in Spain has allowed her to 'grow'.

"Liz is an army wife and she had twins when she was 16. To live that life, you have to be strong and have grit but I think while she's been in Spain, she's acquired more confidence and she's grown a bit," she explained.

"She doesn't pull any punches and she's not the most reserved of people but I think the scriptwriters have made her a lot more confident. She's obviously got a lot of money now - she made this money in Spain."

Coronation Street airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings on ITV.
