Dyer, who will make his EastEnders debut on Christmas Day, said that the BBC soap is going through a "mad stage", and is getting beat in the ratings by Emmerdale.
"It's getting beat in the ratings by a farm," said Dyer (via The Mirror ).
"No disrespect but it's a soap about a farm and that is smashing it to pieces in the ratings so they've brought me in to give it a little injection of something," he added.
Responding to the comments on Twitter, Emmerdale actress Charley Webb said that you "should never disrespect another show" and that soap stars should stick together.
Meanwhile, Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa Woodfield, suggested the comments were disrespectful to Dyer's own cast members.
Dyer has since claimed that the comments were "just a bit of banter" and that no disrespect was intended.
Furthermore, in a light-hearted Twitter exchange, Emmerdale's Kelvin Fletcher advised Dyer to "strap a nappy" to his mouth, before asking Dyer if he planned to have him shot.
Dyer's character Mick Carter will be joined by wife Linda (Kellie Bright) and their children Johnny (Sam Strike) and Nancy (Maddy Hill).
