EastEnders to reference Nelson Mandela death in special scene

An upcoming episode of EastEnders will reflect the recent death of Nelson Mandela .

The former South African president and icon of the anti-apartheid movement died on Thursday (December 5) at the age of 95.

A last minute scene has been filmed for Monday night's (December 9) episode of EastEnders, referencing Mandela's passing.

In the scene, Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) and Denise Fox (Diane Parish) will discuss their memories of the day Mandela was released from prison after 27 years.


A spokesperson for EastEnders said: "EastEnders always aims to reflect big news stories and events that strike a chord with our audience.


"Nelson Mandela had such a huge effect on so many people's lives that we felt it was important to reflect the impact his death has had."


The long-running series has also aired moments referencing the birth of Prince George, the election of US president Barack Obama, and Andy Murray's win at Wimbledon in the past.
