Richard Madden captured our hearts as Robb Stark on the HBO hit "Game of Thrones." He's hoping to strike gold again with the Discovery mini-series "Klondike." Madden stars as Bill Haskell, who decides to head north in hopes of striking gold in the Yukon gold rush. This time, he's coming to winter!
Bill and his partner quickly find out how dangerous the trek is within the first two weeks. After spending 10 days climbing the side of a mountain, they hear an ominous sound. Then, an avalanche of white buries everyone and everything, save Bill who was quick enough to get behind a boulder. The quest for gold doesn't get any easier from there.
The LA Times' Mary McNamara sees the components of a hit, they just aren't coming together right. She writes that the mini-series "relies on tools that have brought success to others, in this case big names, majestic scenery, historical realism that leans heavily on mud and unshaven jaws ... This three-part, six-hour story is flecked with many fine moments but as a whole more serviceable than splendid.”
On the other hand, Zap2It's Jacqueline Cutler found the premiere quite captivating. "‘Klondike’ gives what a miniseries must to keep us engaged: basic human condition," she wrote. "And it does not get more basic than battling the elements of an endless winter in a time before high-tech materials and portable batteries were invented.”
Discovery is hoping people can't wait to see what happens next on "Klondike," and they won't have to. This three-part mini-series airs on three consecutive nights, continuing Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST on Discovery.
TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
