The Sherlock actor plays insurance salesman Lester Nygaard in the new adaptation, alongside Billy Bob Thornton as drifter Lorne Malvo.
"What a day," Lester says while sitting with Lorne in a hospital waiting room with injuries on his face.
Former Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh also appears as stripper Gina Hess, singing with pleasure about the death of her husband.
The ten-part cable series is set in the same universe as the Coen brothers' cult 1996 film, but contains new characters and plots.
Bob Odenkirk, Colin Hanks, Oliver Platt, Adam Goldberg, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele also star in the series.
Fargo will air on FX in the US from April 15, while Channel 4 will premiere the show in the UK shortly afterwards.
