Funding body Screen Australia has set aside a $400,000 fund to help online content makers bring an alternative side to Erinsborough, that will feature some of the daytime soap's cast.
The Skip Ahead programme will give five popular YouTube channel artists funding and production resources for the new project, The Age reports.
Recipients will team-up with FremantleMedia to devise five-parts to the Neighbours zombie web series.
''It's just poking fun,'' said Louna Maroun, one of the creators to be awarded the opportunity. ''It will be really tongue in cheek. It won't freak everyone out. I'm hoping to see a lot of comedy, as that's what I do best.''
Maroun was enlisted by FreMantleMedia after the production company discovered the artist's YouTube channel that consists of Frankenweenie spoofs and Halloween specials.
Filming on the Neighbours web series is due to begin in a few months. Get the Inside Soap magazine on your iPhone or iPad
