TORONTO - Vocal chords or fan pushback?
That's the question after Robin Thicke pulled out of the Junos, where he was set to perform Sunday night in Winnipeg.
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Canadian music awards, on Sunday morning issued a statement indicating Thicke had been placed on "mandatory vocal rest."
But an online petition emerged on the weekend looking to get Thicke booted off the Junos for his controversial "Blurred Lines" music video.
"Despite the blatant sexism, degradation of women and promotion of rape culture in Robin Thicke’s song and music video “Blurred Lines”, Thicke is nominated for three awards - Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, and the Juno Fan Choice Award - at the upcoming Canadian Juno Broadcast Awards in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 30, 2014. This is not a song, nor a message, that should be rewarded," the petition stated.
"This is show business, so we’re always prepared for this type of situation,” said John Brunton, executive producer of Insight Productions, which is producing the Junos, in a statement Sunday.
The main Junos gala is set to air Sunday night from Winnipeg on the CTV network.
