Rooney impressed pundits and fans with a strike that helped deliver the 2-0 win to Manchester United, drawing comparisons to David Beckham's famous goal at Wimbledon in 1996.
Brand - a long-time West Ham supporter - was asked to compare the two strikes while sitting in with Alan Shearer, Leonardo and Gary Lineker for a Sport Relief edition of Match of the Day .
"I think David Beckham's goal is a very beautiful and iconic goal, and wasn't immediately preceded by some terrible elbow work," he quipped.
The comic then declared: "I would have to say David Beckham's [goal was better]… Ultimately, this is a day where we have to focus on the injustices that preceded Rooney's goal."
Brand went on to insist that he has not given up hope for West Ham United, and praised the club for sticking by manager Sam Allardyce.
"A lot of the clubs who got rid of their managers are struggling down at the bottom, aren't they?" he commented.
"There's things that could improve, but I think [Sam] is a strong fellow and he's a good bloke. I think West Ham seem a lot stronger."
The Sport Relief telethon was held on Friday (March 21), and broke its previous earnings total with £51,242,186 in donations.
