The Bollywood star criticised the Indian Supreme Court's December 11 ruling on Section 377, which deems homosexual acts to be an offence.
Equal rights activist Harish Iyer said: "This is the first time that someone has broached the topic of equal rights for all sexualities on Koffee With Karan."
Iyer - who features in The Guardian list of 100 most influential LGBT people in the world - added: "Sonam spoke from her heart, and it was a passionate plea against Section 377.
"Sonam is a beacon of hope, effervescent with positive energy. I couldn't resist myself from tweeting her immediately that I love her. She deserves a big queer hug."
Speaking at length on the topic, the I Hate Luv Storys actor stated that India has gone back in time following last year's verdict.
The University of East London graduate was joined by her father, Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kapoor, on the TV show.
Indian celebrities including Aamir Khan, Celina Jaitley, Shabana Azmi, Freida Pinto, Anupam Kher and John Abraham have all spoken out against the court decision.
