Karl Davies talks The Crimson Field: 'War makes a lot of money'

BBC One's The Crimson Field is relevant to modern audiences because we are still making "the same mistakes", actor Karl Davies has said.

Davies returns as traumatised soldier Prentiss in episode four of the World War One drama, airing this Sunday (April 27) at 9pm.

"You're very aware through every episode that there would've been people in this situation for real," the actor told Digital Spy. "It's not a fantasy - it's based on fact and this is what we actually did to each other."

The 31-year-old continued: "You hope we will never do such terrible things to that extent again, although it doesn't seem like we've learned that much 100 years on.

"Unfortunately we still are making many of the same mistakes - they don't seem to learn, but they do make a lot of money out of war - that seems to be the overriding theme."

Davies - who revealed that Prentiss is "almost beyond repair" when he returns from the front line - previously appeared opposite The Crimson Field co-star Hermione Norris in ITV's gentle drama Kingdom.

"It was lovely to see her again - [though] not quite in the same circumstances!" he laughed. "Kingdom was quite comical and light-hearted - this is a very different feel for a Sunday night."

The Crimson Field attracts over 6 million on BBC One
