The comic insisted that he will round off his Channel 4 comedy with either a full third run or a one-off special.
"It's the first time I've ever considered doing a third series of something," said Gervais, who wrapped both The Office and Extras after two series and a special.
"I think I certainly want to do the two series and a special for Derek and then see. I don't want to make TV for the sake of it.
"You have other ideas and also you don't want to outstay your welcome."
Gervais writes, directs and plays the title role in the series, which also stars Kerry Godliman and David Earl.
Series two of Derek begins tonight (Wednesday, April 23) on Channel 4, and will be available to US residents via Netflix from May 30.
