Apple demands sales ban on patent-violating Samsung phones

Apple has requested some older Samsung smartphones to be banned from sale, following a recent ruling that the Korean company copied some of its patented features.

Despite winning $119.6m (£71m) in damages for three out of five patents, the iPhone maker is also seeking a retrial in pursuit of the $2.2bn (£1.3bn) it originally sought.

Apple is demanding that offending handsets - the Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S III and Stratosphere smartphones - be pulled for violating its patents for quick links, slide to unlock and automatic word correction.

Newer handsets were not included in the trial, but Apple argued that "software or code capable of implementing any Infringing Feature" should also be prohibited from sale.

Apple's lawyers claim that the company "will suffer irreparable harm if Samsung continues its use of the Infringing Features" and "that monetary damages cannot adequately compensate Apple for this resulting irreparable harm".

During the original court case, Samsung also sought $6m (£3.5m) in damages from Apple, but was only awarded $158,400 (£94,000).
