The Friends star, who has helmed several episodes of her television comedy Cougar Town, will make her movie directorial debut with Just Before I Go.
When asked by Hello! magazine on the number of women directors in the film industry, Cox said: "I don't know why there's a lack [of female directors].
"There's a lack of a lot of things that women have not had the opportunity to do, but times are really changing. I think in the way we raise our children now, they're raised with such confidence and drive and so different, so hopefully that will change."
She added: "I hope there are more women directors. If women want to direct, they should be out doing it because it sure is fulfilling."
Just Before I Go stars American Pie actor Seann William Scott as a man on the verge of giving up on life. He travels back to his hometown in a bid to make amends.
Cox said of the film: "It kind of shows that when you think that something is going on with you, you realise, as you look out, that everyone is struggling and we all have our issues. I was also drawn to the hilarity and subversive humour.

"Between the heartfelt stuff and the crazy obscure humour, it was perfect for my personality. It's grounded yet outrageous."
Just Before I Go also features Olivia Thirlby, Kate Walsh, Garret Dillahunt, Kyle Gallner, Rob Riggle, Elisha Cuthbert and David Arquette.
It debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last month, although a wide release date has yet to be announced.
