John Mayer has a lot to say about love. He dedicated an entire album to the topic of heartbreak on 2009′s “Battle Studies,” and moved out to Montana to construct campfire blues on his latest album, “Paradise Valley” (singing and riding a mechanical bull with former flame Katy Perry for the “Who You Love” single ).
Mayer’s latest love song release is borrowed from Beyoncé however. And instead of the soaring sounds and flashing Coney Island lights on Bey’s original “XO,” Mayer incorporates his harmonica and acoustic simplicity. The guitarist subtly riffs and covers the pleading lyrics: “Kiss me, kiss me before they turn the lights out.” Released on Mayer’s Soundcloud, the track features cover art with patchwork X and O letters.
Mayer first sang praises for the songstress a month ago on Twitter, calling her voice on the track “real and raw.”
A few days later, he performed the piece in person at a concert in Adelaide, Australia, to appreciative Aussie fans.
Mayer is next headed to perform at Jay Z’s Made In America music festival in Los Angeles on August 31.
