Katy Perry portrait added to US gallery

A portrait of Katy Perry will join a collection at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.

The painting, titled 'Cupcake Katy', is a 2010 work by Will Cotton.

Cotton also worked with Perry on her music video for 'California Gurls'.

An official release from the gallery read: "Cupcake Katy is expected to enrich the National Portrait Gallery's important collection of influential women in the music industry."

Kim Sajet, director of the Portrait Gallery, said "Katy Perry comes from an American tradition of strong women entertainers who have 'turned the tables' on their audiences by challenging the supposedly superficial representation of their pop personas."

"On a closer look, they are complex figures - musically powerful, visually alluring and business savvy."

The US National Portrait Gallery was established back in 1962.
