Mario Kart Wii voted best Mario Kart game in poll

Mario Kart Wii has been voted the best Mario Kart game by Digital Spy readers.

In a poll that attracted nearly 6,000 votes, the Nintendo Wii entry proved the most popular game with 29.46% of the public vote.

Mario Kart: The 10 best tracks in franchise's history

It narrowly beat Mario Kart 64, which came second with 23.87% of the vote.

The original Super Mario Kart came third with 18.20%, followed by Nintendo GameCube's Mario Kart: Double Dash with 14.67%.

Mario Kart DS proved the most popular handheld game with 7.59%, followed by 2011's Mario Kart 7 with 4.85% and Mario Kart: Super Circuit with only 1.35% of the vote.

Bundled with a Wii Wheel accessory, Mario Kart Wii made its debut in 2008.

Selling more than 35 million copies, it's the best-selling Mario Kart game of all time, and the second best-selling Wii game behind Wii Sports.

Upcoming Wii U game Mario Kart 8 will feature courses from all previous Mario Kart games, including Moo Moo Meadows and Grumble Volcano from the Wii version.

Mario Kart 8 makes its Wii U debut on May 30.
