The campaign was launched this morning by the show's former host LeVar Burton .
Burton's goal is to bring back the series in the form of an interactive website, Deadline reports.
Reading Rainbow ran on PBS from 1983-2006 and is well known for motivating children to read.
Burton promised those who contributed would receive gifts such as themed mugs and calendars.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that we would reach our goal on the very first day," Burton said.
"People are getting involved — it's been pretty overwhelming."
Burton also hopes to offer Reading Rainbow to "disadvantaged" classrooms for free, as well as tools that help assist teachers in their pursuit.
