Vera Farmiga wanted Sarah Paulson's 12 Years a Slave role

Vera Farmiga has revealed that she wanted Sarah Paulson's role in 12 Years a Slave .

Paulson played Mistress Epps in the Academy Award-winning historical drama, the wife of slave master and cotton farm owner Edwin (Michael Fassbender).

Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter 's actress roundtable, Farmiga told Paulson: "Trust me, I wanted [your part]. It was a high-stakes role. Girl, I made a full-blown audition tape with hurdy-gurdies playing in the background."

Paulson admitted she was not aware that Farmiga had also auditioned for the role, saying: "That's not possible. You would have been so extraordinary. I didn't know."

Farmiga is currently starring in A&E television series Bates Motel and is also due to reunite with Peter Sarsgaard in upcoming comedy Prima .

Meanwhile, Paulson is expected to return for a fourth season of American Horror Story: Freak Show.
