Graphic novels are frequently the target of censorship due to their visual nature and the perception that they are a medium intended solely for children.

"This year we spotlight graphic novels because, despite their serious literary merit and popularity as a genre, they are often subject to censorship," said Judith Platt, chair of the Banned Books Week National Committee.

Hertfordshire libraries recently restricted graphic novels to over-16s following complaints by a mother.

Alison Bechdel's Fun Home has been the subject of an attempt to cut university funding in South Carolina.

Jeff Smith's acclaimed series Bone was #10 on the American Library Association's Top 10 list of Frequently Challenged Books.

Banned Books Week 2014 will run from September 21 to 27.
