“Ugh, now I get to be the cool indie chick I imagined I would be when I was 14!!!” Azealia Banks tweeted on Thursday (July 10), right after informing her nearly 400,000 followers that she’s going to cut ties with her label, Universal Music.
“IM ABOUT TO GET OUT OF MY DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS THE BIG SURPRISE!!!!!” the musician tweeted, followed by, “I’m feeling like miss celie at the end of color purple.”
She even gave a little shoutout to indie band Interpol, whose new album El Pintor drops this fall.
Back in January, Banks took to Twitter to rage against her label, the denizens of which she said were holding her back from releasing new music.
“I’m really in hell here,” she said, according to The Guardian . “I’ve been gratefully riding off of mixtape fumes for the past two years … [But] my fans really need some new music … Universal needs to just hand me over to another label who knows what to do with me … I’m tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft. They don’t even know what they’re listening for or to.”
Her tweets today suggest that her wish has come true. Banks was previously signed to XL Recordings and was similarly unhappy with the situation.
The question now becomes, as evidenced in tweets from fans retweeted by Banks: When are we getting new music? We’re still waiting on her long-promised record, Broke With Expensive Taste. Perhaps now we’ll finally get it?
We’ve reached out to Universal Music for comment.
