The actor will play Captain Hook in the network's live musical broadcast, reports Deadline .
Walken has previously appeared in musical films such as Jersey Boys, Pennies From Heaven and Hairspray.
The other lead roles in Peter Pan have not been revealed.
NBC president Robert Greenblatt revealed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour today (Sunday, July 13) that Frozen star Kristen Bell was approached to play title character Peter Pan, but her schedule meant she couldn't take part.

He said: "She is somebody I talked to about doing it, and she was interested, but she's doing [Showtime]'s House of Lies.
"We've had several women who wanted to do it but they're either busy or their schedules don't work… I need that person from August 5 to December 5, so that locks out the Kristen Bells of the world.
"It's been tricky finding the right person in the schedule that we needed, but we're close... and it's going to be a female."
Peter Pan Live! is due to air in December.
