The pop star has approached director Amy Heckerling to be cast in the role of Cher Horowitz in the adaptation of the 1995 film, Vulture reports.
Heckerling said: "Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death."
The musical is currently in its early stages of production with Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, creating the script and lyrics.
The director also praised Iggy Azalea's Clueless-inspired music video for 'Fancy'.
"It looked like they had more money for the video than I had for the movie," she said, "but I was extremely flattered and I thought she was amazing. And whoever did the costumes, I don't know how they did that."
