Smith was recently invited to visit the film's set at Pinewood Studios and shared some details about the experience.
Last week, the director posted a teary-eyed photo of himself outside the studios on Instagram, saying: "Visited JJ and his EP VII set. I signed the NDA so all I can share are this old Bantha-Tracks subscriber's tears and snotty nose of joy. The Force is WITH this movie. Holy Sith..."
Speaking at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday (July 5), Smith added: "So we go to the set and they're actually shooting - and this is what I can't tell you, what they were shooting - but what I saw, I absolutely loved.
"It was tactile, it wasn't a series of f**king green and blue screens in which later on digital characters would be added. It was there, it was happening."
He continued: "I saw uniforms, I saw artillery that I haven't seen since I was a kid. I saw them shooting an actual sequence in a set that is real - I walked across the set, there were explosions - and it looked like a shot right out of a f**king Star Wars movie.
Star Wars Episode VII cast
"[Abrams is] building a tactile world, a world you can touch. And he's replicating it with all the love of somebody that has the world's greatest collection of Star Wars figures."
As part of his visit, Smith revealed that he also got to walk around 'Stage M', which has a full-scale Millennium Falcon.
Last night, two newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Anderson were added to the cast, while production also announced that filming would be delayed slightly due to Harrison Ford's ankle injury.
Star Wars Episode VII will open in cinemas on December 18, 2015.
