The Golden Globe-nominated actor explained that he "never" expected to commit to a long-running television series.
"I was extremely nervous about it," he confessed. "I started as a theatre actor and I could never sustain a run for longer than three months.
"I thought playing a character for more than three months would drive me absolutely bonkers, so I never thought I'd be in a television show."
Schreiber added that "there aren't that many scripts in the feature world... that come close to what people are writing in the premium cable world".
"It's the time of the writer, I think, and the venues for that are the premium cable shows," he said.
Ray Donovan - airing on Showtime in the US - will return to Sky Atlantic in the UK on Tuesday, July 15 at 10pm.
Schreiber revealed that he sustained an injury while shooting the new episodes - breaking his nose after colliding with a glass wall.
"There's a lot of fighting in the show," he said. "But I haven't had any serious injuries apart from the broken nose!"
Ray Donovan was recognised in yesterday's Emmy nominations, with Jon Voight - who plays Schreiber's on-screen father - getting a nod in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
