So many classic cartoons have gotten the live action treatment: “The Flintstones,” “Scooby Doo,” “G.I. Joe,” “Garfield” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (even though the titular cat and turtles were CGI) and a bunch of others. Well, MTV has been producing animated shows since the late 1980s, and it’s high time some of those classics get brought off the animation cel and into the real world, like “Aeon Flux” with Charlize Theron in 2005.
We’re sure plenty of actors could do these roles justice, but purely as a thought experiment, here are some picks for MTV’s classic cartoon characters.
“Beavis and Butt-Head”: Michael Cera and Jon Heder
This show already got a movie version, “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America,” but a live-action one would be fantastic. We would say Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott could rekindle their “Dude, Where’s My Car?” magic, but aside from having the right hair color, those guys are entirely too handsome. So how about Michael Cera and “Napoleon Dynamite” star Jon Heder? They have just the right mix of oddball energy and the smarts needed to play dumb.
“Celebrity Deathmatch”: Stephen Colbert and John Michael Higgins

This beloved claymation show featured plenty of celebs in the ring, so casting the fighters would be easy. As for hosts Johnny Gomez and Nick Diamond, let’s go with John Michael Higgins, who played a jerky announcer in “Pitch Perfect,” and Stephen Colbert, two guys who are great at deadpan deliveries and can rock a bow tie.
“Daria”: Aubrey Plaza

The queen of all MTV cartoons, Daria Morgendorffer is still fondly remembered by every alternative girl who came of age in the ’90s. The ultimate actress is a no-brainer: “Parks & Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza was born for the role, and even got into costume for CollegeHumor’s parody “Daria: The Movie” video. We’d happily watch two hours of this in theaters…
“Aeon Flux” (if Charlize Theron is unavailable): Anne Hathaway

This classic MTV cartoon got a big-budget release almost 10 years ago, and these days in Hollywood, that means it’s primed and ready for a reboot. Who is the most butt-kicking brunette around? Well, she already played Catwoman — so if she’s still got the leather suit around, it’s Anne Hathaway all the way.
“SpongeBob SquarePants”: Seth Rogen

Oh, you didn’t know SpongeBob was an MTV show? It’s actually owned and distributed by MTV Networks, and has even aired on MTV.
The undersea burger chef got his own movie in 2004 that was semi-live action (in that David Hasselhoff appeared and was, technically, not a cartoon). A fully live movie would need an actor with an infectious laugh, and Seth Rogen certainly has the smile and charm. Also, Danny DeVito in a crab costume would make for a perfect Mr. Krabs.
“The Ren & Stimpy Show”: Charlie Day and Jonah Hill

One of the biggest cult cartoons around, “Ren & Stimpy” originally aired on both Nickelodeon and MTV in the ’90s. Ren the Chihuahua is tiny and full of manic anger, so how about “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Charlie Day, the current master of the comic meltdown? Stimpy the Cat is perfect for a relaxed Jonah Hill.
“Rocko’s Modern Life”: Bret McKenzie (with Kevin James and Jason Alexander)

Born out of MTV’s seminal “Liquid Television” (like “Aeon Flux”), this show aired a few times on MTV and became a staple of Nickelodeon reruns. Featuring a wallaby named Rocko from Down Under — along with his best friend Heffer and the neurotic turtle Filburt — an adaptation would need some actors who can get wacky. A few qualified choices? Bret McKenzie of “Flight of the Conchords” as Rocko, with Kevin James and Jason Alexander completing the trio.
