The song, titled 'Chulein Aasman' (Reach for the Sky), was produced in collaboration with composer Salim Merchant and penned by Akhtar and Shraddha Pandit.
The Bhaag Milkha Bhaag actor joined forces with Google's Helping Women Get Online initiative, in association with MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) for the progressive movement to promote a gender-equal world.
The MARD initiative, which was launched by Akhtar following the December Delhi rape that caused outrage across India, aspires to promote gender equality and respect for women.
The 40-year-old said that he remains committed to raising awareness of the issues affecting women.

"I will do my best and contribute to create awareness," he explained. "I am happy that I am part of this change. The issues that MARD addresses - gender equality and respect for women - need every possible avenue and platform."
Several other Indian actors have pledged their support to initiatives promoting gender equality in India, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Aamir Khan, who recorded a video message endorsing the cause of the One Billion Rising campaign, a movement to end violence against women.
