The film is set to be a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Orci is taking over the Star Trek director's chair after JJ Abrams left to helm the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII.

Orci has an extensive body of work that includes writing the prior 2 Star Trek movies as well as other films including Mission: Impossible III, Transformers and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He has also worked on various TV shows such as Fringe, Alias and Hawaii Five-0.

Star Trek 3 will be his feature film directing debut.

Power Rangers is still intended to be released worldwide on July 22 2016.
