X Factor earns 8.4 million on ITV, Doctor Who nearly 5m on BBC One

The X Factor continued with nearly 8.4 million viewers on ITV last night (September 20), according to overnight figures.

Simon Cowell's singing competition averaged 8.36m (39.2%) from 8pm, with a further 211k (1.1%) tuning in on +1. The Xtra Factor on ITV2 attracted 615k (3.2%).

Earlier on ITV, The Chase took 4.06m (21.6%) in the 8pm hour. Through the Keyhole was watched by 3.78m (19.6%) from 9.20pm.

The latest episode of BBC One's Doctor Who drew 4.92m (23.5%) from 7.30pm. It was followed by The National Lottery: In It to Win It (3.04m/14.4%) and Casualty (3.9m/19.5%).


On BBC Two, Daniel Craig's World War II drama Defiance managed 1.01m (5.5%) from 9pm.


A repeat of Channel 4's Grand Designs appealed to 690k (3.2%) in the 8pm hour, before an airing of action-comedy movie The A-Team won 1.17m (6.4%).

On Channel 5, repeats of The First Great Escape and World War II in Colour were seen by 525k (2.5%) and 666k (3.3%) respectively.

ITV3's Midsomer Murders topped the multichannels during primetime with 886k (4.7%) from 9pm.


Boardwalk Empire attracted 97k (0.5%) from 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
