Maggie Smith has already been declared a Dame by the Queen of England, but she was honored yet again last Friday (October 17), when Queen Elizabeth II officially inducted her into the Order of the Companions of Honor. Only 65 living people currently share this same distinction.
The 79-year-old actress is known for her role on the TV series “Downton Abbey,” but she’s been acting in films, shows, and live plays for more than 60 years! Dame Maggie also notably played Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies.
In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II made Smith a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire, which is what lets her use the “Dame” in front of her name. It’s the female equivalent of knighting a man, which would turn him into a “Sir.”
Now, she can add a “CH” after her name, too. Not bad for six whole decades of acting like a pro!
