Big Sean is less than a month from dropping his third album, Dark Sky Paradise , and he sure has no plans to let the release date come and go quietly. After his single “IDWFU” hit #1 at both urban and rhythmic radio this week, Sean Don kept his foot on the pedal and dropped “Blessings” featuring Drake and Kanye West late Thursday night (Jan. 29).
The Vinylz-produced banger has a bit of an ominous, eerie feel sonically, but the lyrics from the all-star cast are generally upbeat and self-assured, not dark. All three talk about their grind and the spoils of it, but also about family, and the role it plays for them.
“My grandma just died I’m the man of the house,” Sean raps. “So every mornin’ I’m up ’cause I can’t let them down.”
Drizzy, meanwhile, shouts out his late mother. “Stop worryin’ about whoever’s next/ I am just worried about my mama worryin’ less.”
Not one to lack confidence, Yeezy basques in his successes — and the path he and wife Kim have set for daughter North — on his track-closing verse: “Right now callin’ you from my home gym/ Right after that, n—a I’m gon’ swim/ Just did a couple laps in my home pool/ And my daughter right there gettin’ homeschooled/ I’m blessed, and I was thinkin’ ’bout startin’ up my own school.”
Kanye University on the way? Safe to say enrollment would be high.
After hitting us with four rewind-worthy tracks back in September, Sean was at it again here, and sure seems to be in a zone leading into Dark Sky, due out Feb. 24.
