Facebook may have lost some of its cachet in recent years now that literally everyone in your family is on it, but when you want to check in on an ex or a childhood friend who moved away in sixth grade (and by “check in” we mean “see if they’re hot now”), Facebook is still the only game in town.
The game of covert life status checks is dangerous, though, because your friends may be doing a lot better than you are — or appear to be, anyway. Comedian Pat Regan has written a song about the time-sucking, jealousy-driven habit for CollegeHumor, which examines life in the late-night Facebook k-hole, where you discover that “your girlfriend’s a 10, and mine’s not even real”:
Regan ultimately points out that you’re not seeing the whole truth and nothing but the truth through your friends’ posts, though. Once you realize they’re just as miserable and alone behind those calculated posts, you can move on to a new hobby, like crawling back through a coworker’s Instagram history.
