News of Spartan's existence prompted speculation that Internet Explorer could soon be phased out, but the computing giant has hinted that the software will continue to serve business users going forward.
"Windows 10 also includes an improved version of Internet Explorer that's great for large organisations. It's more secure than ever, always up-to-date for modern sites, with Enterprise Mode compatibility for existing web apps," said Microsoft in a statement issued to Digital Spy.
"Customers on Windows 7 can upgrade to Internet Explorer 11 now to easily migrate to Windows 10 when it becomes available."
Designed for both touch and non-touch hardware, 'Project Spartan' features a minimalist layout, note-taking and sharing features, built-in Cortana support for supplemental information, and a Reading Mode.
"'Project Spartan' [is] a new browser that consumers are going to love across all their Windows devices - including the ones they bring to work," said Microsoft.
"It's built to put the web to work for you; it's cleaner, smarter and better at all the things you do online."
