The documentary, currently known as Armada, will air on BBC Two this spring.

Historian Dan Snow will front the three-part programme with a selection of experts, while CGI will also play a role.

Dobson is famous for playing Angie Watts in EastEnders, and has also appeared in New Tricks, Casualty and Red Dwarf.

She also took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009.

Dobson said: "Elizabeth I is a gift of a role, and one I've always hoped I'd get the opportunity to play.

"It's been a real honour to work with the BBC History team to recreate these pivotal moments in history, and playing a queen was one of the most enjoyable times I've had!"
