Hewlett posted artwork of two of the band's animated members Murdoc and Noodle on his Instagram account, which first raised suspicions of a reunion.
He then responded to a fan question regarding the band's status with: "Yes Gorillaz Returns."
Last year, band member Damon Albarn revealed that a new Gorillaz record was in the pipeline, after the virtual band took a hiatus in 2012.
Albarn revealed that he had plenty of material, but said he was unsure whether he would use it.
Gorillaz are behind songs such as 'Feel Good Inc', 'DARE' and 'Dirty Harry'.
