While you’re off gathering snacks and drinks for today’s Super Bowl game, it’s important to remember not everyone is in the game-day spirit. Take M.I.A. for example, who took to her Instagram to “celebrate” the yearly football game in her signature, opinionated style.
“Happy super bowl Sunday!” she added as a caption.
We’re guessing Maya is not too concerned with Deflategate or Marshawn Lynch, but she might have an interest in Katy Perry’s halftime show.
It’s been three years since M.I.A. made a memorable guest appearance at the Super Bowl during Madonna’s halftime performance. The rapper joined Madonna and Nicki Minaj for a performance of Madonna’s latest single, “Give Me all Your Luvin.” After a rousing few minutes, M.I.A. gave the camera the same middle-finger salute, leading to a lawsuit from the league for $1.5 million.
In late 2013, Maya released a video statement calling out what she considered the hypocrisy of the NFL’s decision, and asking fans to submit evidence of NFL wrongdoing. In August 2014, an attorney for M.I.A. released a statement claiming the NFL and the rapper reached a confidential settlement.
We don’t blame her for bowing out of this year’s events (even with Missy Elliot scheduled to make a guest appearance during the halftime show). It’s only a few hours lost anyway.
