American Sniper becomes highest-grossing 2014 release in the US

American Sniper has surpassed the Hunger Games as the highest-grossing 2014 film release in the US.

The biographical war drama, starring Bradley Cooper , has made $337.2 million in the country since its limited cinema debut in December.

Its earnings edge over previous number one holder The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 , which has achieved $336.8 million.

Abroad, the Clint Eastwood-directed movie has earned more than $140 million, dwarfed by Transformers: Age of Extinction's $1.1 billion total.

Since its release, American Sniper has been the centre of intense political debate, with Michael Moore and Seth Rogen among its harshest critics.

However, the movie has been defended by the likes of Sarah Palin and Kid Rock, who both thanked Kyle for his service to his country.

The movie has won several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing and a Critics' Choice Award for Cooper as Best Actor in an Action Movie.
