As demonstrated in a new teaser, characters from the Rare-developed NES title have been reimagined for the upcoming release.
"It has been so much fun to bring the radical attitude and gameplay of the NES classic to the Shovel Knight world," Yacht Club said in a post on its website.
"If you have ever played Battletoads - we're pretty sure their extreme adventures left an impression."
On a similar note, Shovel Knight was released for PS3 and PS4 with exclusive content - allowing players to observe cameos from PlayStation characters such as God of War protagonist Kratos.
Shovel Knight will make its Xbox One debut in April. The announcement was made last night (March 4) at GDC 2015.
This week's conference also saw the announcements of new cross-Xbox and Windows 10 games, an Xbox One version of Elite: Dangerous , as well as news that Microsoft's first-party studios are working on HoloLens games.
