Gotham: Gerald Crane could return to series, reveals Julian Sands

Gotham actor Julian Sands has hinted that his character Gerald Crane could return to the series.

Sands has played Crane - father of Jonathan Crane, the future Scarecrow - in two episodes of the Batman prequel and told Digital Spy that further appearances are "not inconceivable".

"A sticky end ain't necessarily a sticky end," he hinted. "I had a very good time working on Gotham and it's not inconceivable that Dr Crane will be seen again!"

Sands revealed that he signed up to Gotham without reading a script, because the production team were concerned about "security breaches".

"I'd seen the first couple of episodes," he explained. "It would've been easy to do a slight, comical and campy adaptation of the prequel to the Batman myth, but I was mighty impressed by the credibility of the dramatic content.

"And then when I read the scripts, my faith was vindicated, because they're so intense and so beautifully poised."

The actor also admitted that playing Gerald as opposed to a more iconic Batman villain allowed "a degree of freedom" in his performance.

"But even if he had been played by someone else, that wouldn't have been an issue," Sands insisted. "I played Jor-El on Smallville and - at that time - he'd previously only been depicted by Marlon Brando, although I think Russell Crowe has joined the club since!

"So no, that wouldn't have been an issue - in the same way that anybody approaching playing Hamlet can't concern themselves in who else has done it or how else it's been done."

Gotham returns to Channel 5 tonight (March 16) at 9pm.
