The theme for International Women’s Day (Mar. 8) 2015 is “Make It Happen,” which encourages effective action for advancing and recognizing women.
This year, thanks to Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s global campaign, Not There, more women than ever are participating in the annual call to action to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.
Patricia Arquette famously set the movement in motion three weeks ago with her poignant Oscar speech, when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
“To every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights,” she said. “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America!”
IWD has been celebrated in the United States yearly since 1909 and this year, women are disappearing to make their appearance felt.
Wait, how does that work, you ask?
It’s simple: celebrities like Cameron Diaz are changing their profile pictures on social media to the default anonymous image to bring awareness to women’s equality.
“We’re Not There…Yet,” Diaz wrote. “Inequality exists at work / at home / at the doctor’s office / at school – and yet these issues do not get the attention they deserve. It’s almost like we’re NOT THERE at all. ✨Today is International Women’s Day and I am taking part in a campaign that literally removes women from the media. ✨You too can participate. Joining in on the movement are Kate Upton and Karlie Kloss, who posted ghost photos.
