Hollyoaks wins award for Maxine and Patrick domestic abuse storyline

Hollyoaks has won an award for its domestic abuse storyline between characters Patrick Blake and Maxine Minniver.

The soap picked up the Media Campaign or Storyline of the Year Award at the UK Sexual Health Awards on Friday, March 6.

Hollyoaks has won a prestigious health award for its portrayal of domestic abuse by character Patrick Blake towards his partner Maxine Minniver.

The storyline, which developed through 2013 and 2014, involved Patrick (Jeremy Sheffield) showing increasing amounts of control and abuse towards his partner Maxine (Nikki Sanderson).

The plot was initially created as part of the 'This is Abuse' campaign in partnership with the Home Office.

Hollyoaks research coordinator Charlotte Pattullo said: "We are very proud to have won this award as it's the culmination of a lot of hard work.

"Working with charities, including Women's Aid and the Home Office, on the 'This is Abuse' campaign was a real coup for us, but Hollyoaks is known for doing a lot of firsts."

Senior digital editor Chris Norman also added: "It's great in our 20th birthday year to be known as a programme that raises awareness of issues.

"After winning Best Soap at the British Soap Awards last year, which was about entertainment and was fantastic, it's great to win an award which recognises the effect on, and difference that we can make to, people's lives and what they're really going through."

Sanderson recently revealed that her character was no longer under Patrick's "spell".

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look episodes at 7pm on E4.
