Kendrick Lamar Already Set A Record With To Pimp A Butterfly

After an unexpected release a week earlier than scheduled, on Monday, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly album dominated talk among hip-hop fans and across the Internet. The album title and related terms were trending on Twitter throughout the day, while first-impression reviews appeared on many sites, and even Kanye West and Taylor Swift hit social media and weighed in.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise, then, that damn near everyone on earth was listening to the thing.

OK, not quite. But almost.

The project was streamed 9.6 million times on Spotify on its first day, the streaming service confirmed with MTV News. If that number seems like a lot, that’s because it is; K. Dot set the new global record for the most streams in a single day worldwide, eclipsing Michael Buble’s Christmas, which had 9.5 million this past Christmas Eve.

Understandably, this was reason for Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, the CEO of Kendrick’s label, TDE, to celebrate.

Still, we’ll have to wait a few days to see of Top and Dot are able to accomplish another goal: Selling a million copies of the album in the first week — though given the overwhelming response to the album so far, anything seems possible.

For now, though, I’m just gonna press play (again) on my copy of To Pimp A Butterfly.

I'm still me.
