No, Kendrick Lamar’s new album is not called Untitled, and the cover is not all black, like many initially reported.
And though we still can’t be positive that we now do have the actual title and cover for the album, which drops Mar. 23, K. Dot seemed to suggest that it is called To Pimp A Butterfly, based on a revealing Instagram post he dropped early Wednesday morning (Mar. 11).
In the caption, he wrote: “‘Don’t all dogs go to heaven? Don’t Gangsta’s boogie? Do owl sh-t stank? Lions, Tigers & Bears. But TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY. Its the American dream n—a….’ – lil Homie.”
TDE’s CEO, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, suggested as much, as well.
The potential title evokes Harper Lee’s classic 1960 novel “To Kill A Mockingbird.” One of the major themes of that book, like the Compton rapper’s music, is racial prejudice in America.
Maybe Kendrick is the beautiful butterfly, and America, or the music industry, or capitalism, or some other system, has tried to exploit and demean and pimp him. Or maybe not.
We’ll have to wait until the album drops in a few weeks to see what parallels there may be to the book. Luckily, we’re closer to hearing it today than we were yesterday, and we’ll be closer tomorrow than we are today.
What do you think?
