Usher - who currently appears in Starz's series Survivor's Remorse - will play the son of Will Smith's character Captain Steven Hiller.

"My producing partner Harald Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition," Emmerich explained.

Hemsworth is rumoured to be playing the male lead in the film, although his exact character remains unknown.

Goldblum previously revealed that he has been approached to reprise his role as computer expert David Levinson, who helped repel an alien invasion in the 1996 original movie.

Smith's involvement in Independence Day 2 had been the subject of speculation for years, although the latest reports suggest that he will not return.

Independence Day 2 is slated for release on June 24, 2016.
