Jaume Collet-Serra (Run All Night ) told Collider that there has been no progress in getting the film off the ground - simply saying "No, no. There's nothing."
Collet-Serra also suggested that the question of if and when the movie would progress could only be answered by Warner Bros.
Attempts to adapt Katsuhiro Otomo's comic - which was the basis for the classic anime film of the same name - have been shelved several times over the years.
Garrett Hedlund, Ken Watanabe, Helena Bonham Carter and Kristen Stewart had been attached to a project that was closed down in 2012.
Plans for the Akira film were also opposed by fans demanding that Asian actors be cast in the lead roles.
Otomo was awarded the Grand Prix at the most recent Angoulême International Comics Festival.
